A Word from the Presidents

Hej Alla,

We were very proud to, once again, co-promote and be part of FILTER Magazine’s annual Culture Collide Festival, we are already excited for next year’s event.

The Young Professionals had their first mixer of the season this week. The special guest for the evening, actress Liisa Evastina was happy to share experiences from her acting career.  She emphasized on the importance of networking and gave a few useful tips that the Young Professionals could practice at the mixer right away.

I also had the pleasure to have lunch with the Swedish Church of Los Angeles’ new pastor, Staffan Eklund, this week.  A warm welcome to him and his family as we also are looking forward to some fun collaborations in the years to come.

Happy Friday !!

Swedish invasion at Culture Collide 2013

”Sweden Happy Hour” that took place last Friday is a popular feature during the Culture Collide Festival in Echo Park where fresh Swedish music is presented.  Jesper Thorsson, CEO at Export Music Sweden AB, one of the “Sweden Happy Hour” sponsors and contributors, held an opening speech and thanked everyone involved for creating this important platform for Swedish Music in the U.S.

Melpo Mene was the first one of the performers to enter the stage with his signifying bittersweet and nostalgic songs.  “Melpo Mene’s songs give us a wistful, lovesick bliss, like dreaming about an ex-lover,” writes Omar Singer in the online publication Promote & Preserve.  The ones of you who attended The Swedish Affär 2012 remember Melpo Mene’s brilliant performance at Sowden House’s outdoor stage.  Erik Mattiasson, the man behind Melpo Mene recently moved to Los Angeles and is now fully focusing on his a career in the U.S.  We are looking forward to hear more from him!

The tempo was turned up when the next band, Like Swimming, started off with their new hit single “Go Buffalo“.   Like Swimming has performed at Culture Collide with a different band before but makes their U.S. debut as a trio at this years festival.

The very promising duo The Deer Tracks were the last band to enter the stage with a mind blowing performance that invited the whole audience to an experimental electronic music experience in the primeval swedish forest.  Their performance at Culture Collide in Los Angeles was the beginning of their 3 month tour in North America.

SACC-LA’s Young Professionals
Inspirational Business Mixer in Santa Monica

This week SACC-LA’s Young Professionals gathered for an inspirational evening with actress Liisa Evastina at Bar Chloe in Santa Monica.  Many of the Young Professionals that turned up were also actors and actresses and Liisa shared some useful experiences from her acting career in LA.  Liisa also talked about the importance of networking and presenting your self in the right way.  “Small talk is a skill that needs practice” Liisa said and she shared some of her most useful tips on how to get what you want out of a brief conversation.

We feel very fortunate to have so many talents within acting among our Young Professionals and we are following their projects with big excitement.  We also encourage all Young Professionals to post on our Facebook wall when there is an interesting play or event coming up so we can share it to our whole network.

If you are a Young Professional and wants to get involved in our network please don’t hesitate to contact Lisa Öhberg, yp.saccla@gmail.com

CESMI 2013 – From Ocean to Shore

Major investments are made by ship owners and ports to make the maritime industry more sustainable and more profitable.  The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will invest more than $8 bill in the  next ten years in upgrades, infrastructure, and sustainability projects.  And, this is just the beginning.  We are talking about a major shift in the industry and it’s happening now!

Today was the last day of the CESMI maritime conference that puts the attendees right in the middle of these existing developments.

During the three day conference over 20 speakers and keynotes such as Mario Cordero and Benjamin De Alba discussed topics that ranged from ocean power and ship design to cargo handling in ports: “Ocean to Shore.”

CESMI stands for “Creating an Environmentally Sustainable Maritime Industry” and the conference is creating a forum in Los Angeles where global maritime industry leaders, researchers, and Government Officials can meet, share ideas, and develop business and research opportunities, with the aim of creating a highly environmentally sustainable and profitable maritime industry.

Visit the CESMI website for more info and follow the CECMI blog for the latest updates.
