Michael Soroy

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role as the Honorary Consul of Norway in LA!
I was born and raised in Norway, emigrated to the US, went to law school, and opened a law office in Los Angeles. As Norway’s Honorary Consul our office assists Norwegians in our consular district as well as delegations visiting from Norway.

How long have you been the Consul of Norway? And how did you get this position?
Since May 1, 2010. When countries look for honorary consuls, they prefer someone fluent in the native language, knows the consular district, and has a profession with an office suitable for a consulate. Seems like I fit the description I was offered the position. 

You also have your own law firm that specializes in real estate law. What inspired you to start the Law Offices of H. Michael Soroy?
I wanted to practice law on my own. That prompted me to start a law firm.

What has been the most rewarding part about being the Consul of Norway?
To be able to offer consular services for people in distressed situations and where our involvement contributes to a satisfactory outcome.

Do you have a memory that stands out in your career?
A few years ago, Norway invited all US-based consuls for a visit to Norway including Oslo, the Coastal Steamer, Lofoten Islands, the Foreign Ministry, the Parliament (“Stortinget”), and an audience with the King and the Queen.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
When in doubt, trust your gut and instinct.
